BLING -THE SHINNING

Bling on a higher level! - Syrita
Big chains, iced-out pendants, multi-fingered rings and door-knocker earrings. Just when you thought it was safe to pawn that 80's sovereign, you find yourself in Generation Bling. P Diddy popularised the 'canary yellow' diamond he wore on a pinky ring for the GRAMMYS
Caribbean London

Jacob the Jeweller subsequently reported a more than 80% increase in demand for this colour diamond, and who can forget J-Lo's pink diamond engagement ring given to her by Ben Affleck? Surprise, surprise, the pink diamond is now considered the ultimate gem to twinkle from your finger

The fact that most women would give their right kidney for an engagement ring, means that if the said ring also happens to be pink, then boys you can look forward to a lot of…lets say, privileges.

But ‘Bling’ actually started a long time ago, with Hip-Hop acts such as Public Enemy and Run DMC flashing their diamonds, gold and platinum in the shape of enormous medallions on fat bicycle chains draped around their necks. Wearing jewellery of such proportions, one can expect it took a good hour to put on, and made up a third of the artists body weight. But it was all worth it, it was the 80's! There was one universal rule when it came to fashion accessories -the bigger, the better.

After the minimalist period of the 90's, ‘Bling’ was resurrected in 2k with the help of Missy Elliot, 50 cent and Jay-Z. These uber stars wore their status on their sleeves, quite literally. With jewellery, Kobe Bryant bought himself forgiveness, on the flipside Mike Tyson bought himself bankruptcy.

Jewellery made of precious stones and metals is like fine art, or a luxury car. If not bought wisely, it can leave you broke, but for those of us whose salaries don't resemble an international telephone number, there is hope, there is the High Street.

High street jewellers such as Elizabeth Duke and H. Samuel provide jewellery at a snip and it might be more cubic zirconia than Grade A diamond (but it won’t cripple your bank account), as seen with chavs nationwide, it doesn't have to be real. Just huge and noticeable, and people will get the idea.
